For the past couple weeks I have started a new design idea.

bags.

It started when I went to Micheals and bought a blank tote bag for $2. I was feeling like I needed a new crafty hobby. My first bag was a girl and a robot. typical me. after that I just started making bag after bag. I ended up buying a sewing machine and trying to teach myself to sew the bags myself…i hate sewing.

last week I spoke to a gallery owner about selling my bags in her shop. I met with her to show her my designs and she absolutely LOVED them. The gallery opens October 4th and will have emilyo design bags hanging up for $35.

I feel a real sense of accomplishment and I feel like a legit artist. now lets just see if they sell. I will give updates on the opening when I know more.

I have been the senior designer with NI LAKES Magazine for the past two years, previous to that, I was a desgner for three years at a magazine called LAKE. I recently was offered the position of Art Director at another publication called Business People.

I am excited to start this new chapter of my career. I feel like this will be a great opportunity and a learning experience. The company produces several magazines that I will be apart of.

The art director position is something I have been trying to achieve for the past year. Now that I have the title and am working with an established company, I have great expectations for what is to come. I thank Britton Marketing and LAKES for being so supportive of my choice to leave their company to pursue my goals.

I recently created this background for a poster that was being given to a little girl with cancer. There was a poem that went on the poster that was written for her. I hope she sees this and smiles. I love creating “pretty” things that arent made to fit any specifications.

I recently added my photography work to Flickr. I have had a flicker account since 2008, but only recently decided to put my photos on it. I usually use it to communicate with other photographers about using their photos in the magazine I work for. I got a really nice message from one of my frequently used photogs today asking me why i have been holding out on him and not showing my photos. lol i answered honestly and said, I am not a photographer and I don’t feel like what I do as a hobby is comparable to what people do as a profession. It is fun though and my mom says I’m the bestest.

A coworker of mine, Kyle, thought that people would take him more serious if he had a more serious email signature. This is what we settled on as a design.

He is only allowed to use it in internal office emails lol otherwise people might misunderstand kyle’s attempt at being a funny guy.

New Portfolio

I recently decided to rebuild my portfolio. I used an online photobook building program to give it a sleek and professional look. instead of cutting out and mounting each piece, the layouts are printed directly on the pages of the book. It is a large horizontal black linen book with a cameo on the cover. Here is a look at my work. and a link to view it online.

Benefit Design

I was asked to help out with a family project. The project is a Benefit show to raise money for my 16 y/o cousin who needs a lung transplant.

I have been really thinking about ways I could help out. A few things I have come up with are, fliers, posters, a Web Site, and HTML email blast, online donations and photographing the event and selling photos.

Since the event will be held at the American Legion and will be advertised in bars, I felt uncomfortable putting a photo of my cute blonde 16 year old female cousin on posters for possibly inebriated adults to see and comment on. So, I decided to do a drawing of her for the poster and show real photos of her on the WebSite.

I am still working on the WebSite, which I would like like to spend as little money as possible on, so I went with a free hosting site and tried to customize it as much as possible. anight4alyssa.viviti.com.

For the HTML email blast to promote the event and the online donations, I asked web junkie what he thought my best options were. He suggested 2 sites that will let you design and send for free as long as it is under a certain amount of recipients. I soon learned that that emails sent from that web program are flaged as spam and sometimes even blocked. So, I set up an email account specifically for the event, sent the HTML email to that address, then fordarded it from there, deleting all the FW: info before sending. That seemed to fix the problem.

Home Profile

Each issue we feature a home that is one a lake. These homes’ are usually HUGE million dollar houses with all the amenities.

This was the home in March/April

I love doing home layouts. It gets difficult when there is too much copy and everyone wants to show something in the layout. This leads to too many photos that are too small. The emphasis on the huge open beauty of the home gets lost when you try and show too much. The photo on the second spread is a good example of how one large beautiful image makes a bigger impression. The home is all beautiful, but this room was by far its best feature.

March/April 2010 Northern Indiana LAKES Magazine Cover

This was the first Spring issue of 2010. Towards the end of winter, we are all hoping for Spring. This cover image brings the feel of spring with the bright greens and the image the bee and flower. To me, nothing is more “springy” than seeing the bugs come out of hiding and watching the flowers bloom. When you see this cover, it gives you hope that spring is soon to come and reminds you of all the beauty it holds.
